Students in South City, the Chicago neighborhood where I teach, and Humboldt Park, where my friend and collaborator Mike Bancroft lives and works, deal with a great deal of violence on a day-to-day basis. We both had our students create paper-mache memorials, in any shape that would appropriately commemorate the lost individual, then paint them black and decorate with white text. We assembled these into altars with candles, and Mike and I placed the altars in various places in the prosperous and safe northern suburbs, areas such as Evanston, Wilmette, and Kennlworth.
